Live Review: Brassroots

Live at Rich Mix, London, Wednesday 13th July 2011

Support comes from The Hempolics, who blasted out their potent mix of live hip hop, reggae and soulful vocals. They’ve supported Faithless, worked with Maxi Jazz and are well worth checking out. Listen to their tunes on myspace here.

I think it’s biologically impossible to not start dancing when Brassroots hit the stage. They blast out instrumental cover versions of recent chart hits and vintage tunes, entirely on brass instruments. Who needs a synth when you’ve got a trombone? New Order’s electro classic Blue Monday shouldn’t really work when played by a brass band, but it gets the crowd going wild and has to be seen to be believed. Gnarls Barkley, Beyonce and Minogue all get the ‘roots treatment and come off sounding all the better for it. Brassroots even play their own trumpet led dubstep originals! If you’re getting married soon, try to book these guys for the reception! If not, just head down to Rich Mix and see for yourself – they ┬áhave a monthly residency.
