A bowling alley might seem like a random place to hold a funk and soul night, but the atmosphere in The Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes last night was electric as the crowds gathered to see BBC 6′s Craig Charles bring his show to a live audience.
On support duty were The London Afrobeat Collective, who are keeping Fela’s spirit alive with their heavy grooves, driving percussion and stage cramming number of musicians. Check out their tunes here: London Afrobeat Collective, and if you’re lucky enough to be going to Glastonbury this year they’re opening the West Holts stage.
Craig took to the stage about midnight and immediately set the crowd into a dance frenzy. Mixing heavy funk, dance, soul and a little reggae, he set the room on fire. Although he’d never claim to be the most technically able DJ, what Craig Charles has in spades is an ear for a tune that’ll get people’s feet moving. It was hot, loud, sweaty and great fun. You can stream his radio shows here: Craig Charles on BBC 6. Here’s hoping he’s playing the Big Chill again this year!
